Music video director Emmett Malloy followed the band and managed to capture both the special tour, extraordinary concert versions of the band’s minimalist, raw, blues-inspired rock songs and the special relationship between the extroverted Jack White and the introspective Meg White – a formerly married couple who for a long time claimed to be siblings. The film makes striking use of the band’s concert colors: red, white and black.

No Distance Left to Run Documentary

Blur’s music brings back the 1990s with a great emotional rush, and rightly or wrongly, they are associated with the Britpop craze and the huge and now almost unimaginable popularity of Tony Blair. Albarn supported Blair in the early 90s and had meetings with him – though to his credit, he was always less infatuated than Noel Gallagher, and later strongly condemned the Iraq war. (Albarn’s mutation from beautiful boy to troubled man is a rather Blair-ish facial journey.)

The subject of Blair is, however, entirely avoided and Albarn’s rumoured drug issues are also skated over. Set against these evasions are some shrewd points about music and success, about the stressful burden of command shouldered by Albarn, and there’s some tremendous live footage. It’s an engaging film, and may well win Blur new fans.

In the 1960s, Richard O’Barry enjoyed a lucrative career as a specialized animal trainer; he captured the five dolphins that were used in the popular television series Flipper, and taught them the tricks and special commands they used on the show. Four decades later, O’Barry has renounced his former life as a trainer and become an animal rights activist, speaking out against the hunting of aquatic mammals and keeping them in captivity. O’Barry is not welcome in Taiji, a town along the Japanese coast where hunting dolphins is a major part of the local economy, but he and a group of activist filmmakers made their way into the city as well as the carefully guarded harbor in hopes of documenting the abuse of dolphins by fisherman and the poisoning of the waters that has taken a toll on the marine ecology. O’Barry and his colleagues captured some beautiful underwater footage as well as shocking images of how the town’s fisherman have sullied the dolphins and their habitat, and director Louie Psihoyos has used this material as the basis for the documentary The Cove, which received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
