It is the year 2237. After the earth has become uninhabitable due to an ecological collapse, the remaining people live on overcrowded space stations in earth’s orbit.

The crew members spend the most time of the fully automated flight in deep sleep while, in 8 months shifts, always one person stays awake to monitor the space ship. Due to the current terrorist threat there is also an additional security person aboard: Samuel Decker. Toward the end of her shift, Laura Portmann hears unusual noises from the cargo bay, and she feels observed. Her colleagues will be awakened, and together, the crew sets out to investigate the cold cargo space. They make gruesome discoveries.

After the first death, it is clear that on the Kassandra bad things are happening. Everyone begins to distrust the other. Laura Portmann, together with Decker uncovers the real destination of the cargo ship, learns what secret cargo they transport, and discover a large-scale fraud.

Prehistoric shark that makes its way from Alaska, where it was frozen in ice, to the warmer clime of Puerto Vallarta, there it begins to munch on hapless beach-goers. The movie is all the better considering it was done as a direct-to-television film. As such, the production values are quite high, the acting professional, and the plot unfolds nicely. Among the offerings of the Sci-Fi channel, this certainly is a stand-out. I’d like to see more television offerings like this. A very visceral bloodbath and enough tension to make you squirm. This one is actually fun to watch. Also in the cast are: Liv Boughn, Humberto Busto, Aaron Luis, Iva Hasperger, Christina Nicole and a even a small role for Mr. Corman himself.

Intercut is a sequence of images of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) waking up in a VA hospital, where he is one of a seemingly endless number of wounded war veterans. Jake awakens inside a pod-like apparatus, where he’s comforted by hospital staff. Then, through voiceover and dialogue with both hospital and military officials, we learn that Jake has a recently deceased twin brother — Tom, a scientist — who was to be part of a highest-level program overseen by corporate and military strategists. Because Jake and his brother are genetic matches, he’s presented with a unique opportunity: take over his brother’s contract with with corporate-military entity and travel light years away to an outpost on the previously glimpsed world, Pandora.

Acknowledging the notions of “being free” and having a “fresh start”, Jake agrees to the deal as his brother’s body is cremated.

Now aboard a human transporter spacecraft, Jake is one of many soldiers and personnel about to touch down on Pandora, actually a moon of the planet of Polyphemus, some 4.3 light years from Earth. We catch views of the base and its construction as Jake ponders his new role. Then, as the other passengers disembark and take their first steps onto the base, we see Jake make his first pushes into this world, for Jake is in a wheelchair. Jake acknowledges through voiceover that he lost the use of his legs during one of his tours of duty on Earth, and while a spine can be fixed, that “takes money,” and that is tough to come by in the present economy. To add insult to the situation, Jake is referred to as “Meals on Wheels” by a few of his fellow travelers who are about to begin their careers as for-hire workers on Pandora.

A surprise sleeper hit when released in 1992, this romantic fantasy works as a comedic adventure and a gentle tearjerker thanks to Mel Gibson’s appealing performance. He plays Daniel, a daring test pilot who is deeply distraught by the apparent death of his girlfriend, Helen, in 1939. Feeling little reason to live, he volunteers for a pioneering cryogenics experiment and is thawed out 50 years later by two young boys. They bring the confused pilot home to Nat’s single mom, Claire (Jamie Lee Curtis). There’s a hint of romance, but Daniel desperately needs to know if Helen really died in 1939, and he discovers that love has a way of surviving a half-century leap in time. The premise is hokey and certain plot details are conveniently ignored, but Gibson, Curtis, and Elijah Wood (as Nat) hold it together with irresistible charm and just the right balance of fantasy and drama.

Upon arriving on the planet, the crew is captured and sentenced to be tortured. Before being sent away, EO tells the Queen that he sees the beauty hidden within her, and that he brings her the key to unlock it: his song.

As he travels, Robinson is faced with many opportunities for romantic adventures, in particular with the beautiful but cryptic Iris (Clotilde Hesme) and Ombeline (Catherine Frot) an attractive older woman who was once involved with his father; he also attracts the attentions of Theo (Sergi Lopez), an old friend who sings with the opera. Les Derniers Jours Du Monde (aka Happy End or This Is The End; the title literally translates as “Last Days Of The World”) was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
